Tanjore or Thanjavur is famous for a temple built by the Chola king Rajaraja chola. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. The almighty is known as ‘Brihadeshwarar’ or ‘ Peruvudaiyar’ in Tamil. Tanjore is also known as Rice bowl of India because of its lush green paddy fields.

This temple is well preserved and is a UNESCO heritage site. It is also known as ‘‘Big temple” because of its size. It has some excellent architecture and the carvings in the pillars are too beautiful to describe. This temple is entirely built using granite.

There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock.
